A Day in the Life of a Junior Environmental Specialist | Wilderness Edition
Unforgiving skies, muddy footprints across rolling hills, and getting up close and personal with nature.
At Envi-Comm, these are just some of the experiences of our Strategic Environmental Assessment Team (SEAT), particularly our Junior Environmental Specialists, encounter during fieldwork.
Before
The day often starts in the office. They spend time planning their activities, checking requirements, preparing equipment, and completing the necessary documentation.
This is not your typical trip around Metro Cebu. The team often travels to remote areas where road access is limited, and nature dictates the pace of their work. Preparation is key because they may have to spend extended periods in the field.
During
Surveying the land requires a great deal of walking. Whether hiking up hills, crossing streams, or navigating uneven terrain, our SEAT members must carry essential data-gathering tools. These include cameras, GPS devices, recording equipment, personal protective gear, and supplies.
Depending on project conditions, assessments can take several days or even weeks to complete. Throughout the process, the team documents environmental data and conducts on-site observations that support future assessments and recommendations.
Fieldwork can also be unpredictable. There have been instances when sudden downpours or unexpected obstacles forced the team to find alternative routes.
The field assessment concludes once all required data and site observations have been documented. For Junior Environmental Specialists, however, the work does not end when the data gathering phase is complete.
Their journey is often far from over.
It may involve another trek down the mountains or a longer route back due to inclement weather before finally returning to civilization.
Back at the Office
The team begins processing and organizing the information collected from the field. The data is encoded, reviewed, and analyzed as part of the assessment process. They may also consult other experts to validate findings and ensure accuracy.
Meanwhile, other teams assist in compiling supporting documents and preparing reports.
Unlike most people, their workdays do not always begin and end at a desk. These dedicated professionals go above and beyond to deliver quality service to clients, particularly those seeking guidance on environmental compliance and regulatory requirements with the DENR-EMB.
Our Environmental Specialists play a critical role in helping clients make informed decisions. Their work provides the foundation for environmental compliance initiatives, including projects seeking to secure an Environmental Compliance Certificate.
After all, development should be carried out with both people and the environment in mind.

The ECC Isn't a One-Time Permit — Here's What Compliance Actually Requires
An Environmental Compliance Certificate (ECC) is more than just a regulatory requirement for the DENR-EMB—it's an investment in responsible development. It allows you to move your project forward while ensuring its environmental impact is properly assessed and minimized for the benefit of the community.
Things You Need to Know about Environmental Compliance Certificates
- Obtaining the ECC isn't the finish line — it comes with ongoing to-dos (regular reports, monitoring, and adherence to environmental commitments). Most fines and shutdown orders result from a business stopping compliance after being approved, not from never being approved.
- If you change something significant about the project later, you usually can't just keep using the old ECC. Here are some examples: making it bigger, changing what it does, moving it, or selling/transfer it to someone else. You need to formally update it first.
- Not all projects are reviewed the same way. Some go through screening checklists, while others need a full environmental study. Getting sorted into the wrong track early on can cost you months of delay down the line.
So, who can help you secure this essential document?
